MAYOR’S NOTEBOOK-March 2012 Howard M. “Hub” Frawley
“Spring is Here” 2012 is moving along productively. It’s time to get out and greet your neighbors and catch up on household clean ups. Shultz Hardware and Sams Lumber are offering discounts for your paint-up & fix-up projects.
After diligently working with the County on distressed properties for the past 8 years, I have been appointed by the Association of Erie County Governments to serve as a Member of the newly formed Erie County Land Banking Application Committee. The application was completed and sent to Empire State Development. If accepted, our plans are to move forward with the sale of vacant and distressed properties in the Village of Angola and other communities. Therefore eliminating eyesores and improving the economic development for all areas in Erie County.
The Village awarded and completed the Demolition of distressed properties on Penn Avenue and on North Main Street. The Town of Evans Code Enforcement Department has been working hard handling complaints and resolving code issues for the Village.
I am happy to report that the Erie County Community Development Block Grant Program awarded $100,000 to the Angola Library for their expansion project. The total cost of the expansion project is greater than $100,000 but through fundraising and the hard work of the library board funds are growing to help towards the completion. The Village Board has also dedicated approx $26,000 to help fund this expansion
The CSX Bridge repairs, over Big Sister Creek, that were an ongoing hazard to our community have been completed.
Gazebo concerts start in June. A full schedule will be available at the Village Hall and on the Village website.
Additional Holiday lights have been ordered for next season
Goya expansion is nearly complete. I encourage you to take a drive down South Main Street and view the outstanding addition of this facility.
The Friends of the Village will be hosting the Village Wide Garage sales on June 2, from 9-5. If you would like to include your address for the Village Wide garage sale call the Village of Angola at 549-1126.
Due to the successful outcome of the filming of the “Final Night and Day” zombie movie in the Village in the summer of 2010, Deftone Productions has once again approached the Village for another filming. The movie will be called “Ombis” it is an Alien movie. The dates of the Filming will be June 2, June 23 and June 30th. The filming of the movie on June 2 will start at 3PM on North Main at Lake Street. So map-out your Garage sale attendance accordingly
During the June 2nd festivities, the Angola Volunteer Fire Company will be selling refreshments at Centennial Parks William G Houston Gazebo and a Chicken BBQ at the Commercial Street Fire Hall. Make sure you support your local Fire Company Volunteers.
The Village Board is moving forward with the Depot Committee in the relocation of the 1882 Nickel Plate Depot to its final resting place, at Depot Park across from Herman Park on Mill Street. Legislative initiative monies have been on hold for this project. The Village will be preparing the paperwork to move forward.
The Evans-Brant Chamber of Commerce is a business advocate and provides resources and support for its' business members, while offering cost effective benefits. The Chamber recently held their annual dinner in February. Many Businesses and individuals were recognized for their success. I would like to bring attention to our local business “Kims Shear Expression” for being recognized as a successfully growing business and to Village resident Joseph Pisarski as he was recognized as “Citizen of the Year”.
After many requests from Village residents, the Village Clerks office is now accepting Mastercard, Visa and Discover Card for your Property Tax or Water Bill payments. You can use this option at the Village Hall 41 Commercial Street or access an online payment option on the Village Website.
Chief Ernest Masullo of the Town of Evans Police Department has commended many of his officers for the arrest of individuals that have been a menace to our Village properties; residential neighborhoods and vehicles. These arrests have resulted in convictions. The Village Board expresses their gratitude for the hard work of the Town of Evans Police Department as they patrol the Village and ask that the residents do the same. We encourage anyone to use the police tip-line at 217-3585 to report any suspicious activity you may see in your neighborhood. We must work together to keep our community safe
In closing, the Village Board and I have worked hard on preparing the 2012-13 budget to eliminate the need for any property tax rate increases. So we are happy to have been successful in providing a budget that will maintain the same tax rate for our residents keeping it at 5.15 per thousand.
Always remember to support your local businesses
The Village Website will display any last minute emergencies such as waterline breaks,
Mayor Howard “Hub” Frawley
